Burnt Jacket Mountain rises between Holeb and Little Big Wood Pond north of the Moose River. The hike climbs to a granite outcropping below the summit. From this scrub pine– covered granite dome, you have fine views in every direction. In theory the trail continues another 0.5 mile to the true summit, but it has become overgrown and almost impossible to follow. There also are no views from this summit. There are two Burnt Jacket Mountains in this guide. Unfortunately for us, the specific stories that led to the naming of the Burnt Jacket Mountains have been lost. But you can imagine someone sitting too close to the fire to get warm or draping a wet coat over a rock to dry and not seeing the steam turn to smoke. It’s a scene that became a story repeated often enough that the mountain near where it happened got named after the incident.
