This is an easy hike through stands of white birch, mountain laurel, and meadows teeming with blueberry bushes. You’re at an elevation of 2,000 feet—not the highest point in the state, but high enough to sense you’re on top of a mountain. As you hike through a meadow to the trees, at times it feels surprisingly like an alpine forest. Wykoff Run Natural Area is a 1,252-acre segment of the Elk State Forest section of the 48,000-acre Quehanna Wild Area. This massive network of natural areas, wilderness, and state forest along the Allegheny High Plateau was once the site of oil and gas well drilling, as well as extensive logging. When the loggers pulled out, they left behind the limbs and waste wood, which fueled the wildfires that left this area treeless and devoid of vegetation.
