This ride travels through the Valley of Fire State Park, home to some of the most amazing sandstone formations in all of Nevada. The ride follows Valley of Fire Highway, winding its way through the park and eventually making its way to the neighboring town of Overton. Dedicated in 1935, the Valley of Fire is the oldest park in the state of Nevada. It is home to formations of bright red Aztec sandstone that were created during the Jurassic period 150 million years ago. Because these bright red rocks stand out in the otherwise muted desert, it gives the rocks the appearance of being on fire—giving the area its name. The park, which is not far from Lake Mead, covers 42,000 acres. The sandstone formations are the result of giant sand dunes—estimated to be 3,000 feet deep—that stretched across the area during the time of the dinosaurs.
