A hike to a small valley, along a trout and salmon river, through dense softwoods and over mature hardwood ridges. The Ducktrap River is one of a handful of streams that is host to an autumn run of Atlantic salmon, called "the king of game fish" by some. Special fishing regulations protect the salmon and native brook trout here. General location: Near the town of Lincolnville near Penobscot Bay in Waldo County.

My husband, two children (ages 9 & 11) and I set out to complete the Forest Loop Trail. Unfortunately, the trail was poorly marked and we got horribly lost and ended up on Route 52. For the first time in my life, I had to call a taxi cab (not easy to find in this area!) to return us to our vehicle from our hike. I am wondering if we attempted the trail too early in the season before they had a chance to refresh the trail markers. Not our favorite hiking experience.
