Some may say to avoid Black Crater, as the near constant climbing and hot exposed areas are brutal in the summer. The trail is steep, but it’s mostly soft and easy to follow. Kind people who have previously hit the trail have left several hiking sticks at the trailhead for the rest of us. Grab one of these tossed-aside staffs for a little extra stability on the scree fields near the summit. There's no warm up on this trail. After leaving the parking, the Black Crater Trail begins to climb almost immediately.
