Smack-dab in the middle of the state, the Badlands are Central Oregon’s newest wilderness area. The area sits atop the Columbia River Basalts, so it’s mostly flat with a spattering of interesting lava features. This relaxing trail winds gently through a juniper desert until it reaches an unusual formation called Flatiron Rock. Because the area is so vast, the trail is unlikely to feel crowded, even on busy days.
