While Charlton Lake lies pretty close to Willamette Pass near Waldo Lake, you can get to it via a few bumpy back roads off the Cascade Lakes Highway. The final road to the trailhead is long and slow, but once you’re here, it’s a mere hop, skip, and a jump to Charlton Lake. Pack a lunch and spend the day hiking, swimming, and enjoying the great outdoors. Try the pleasant loop to the smaller Lily Lake before a quick jaunt to hang out on the shores of Charlton Lake. In less than .75 mile, you'll reach the southern shores of a small lake. You'll see the destruction from forest fires around most of the lake, although there's a treed section on the southwestern edge that somehow escaped the burn. Lily Lake is a good spot to stop for a snack or make a refreshing jump into the cool pool on hot days before continuing on.
