This point-to-point ride of 26 miles gains some 2,500 feet of elevation and loses even more, since St. George is several hundred feet lower than the trailhead. It encompasses both extended climbs and, between 4 and 12 miles, a series of testy little ups and downs that demand constant shifting as you roller-coaster through a repetition of low ridges and shallow draws (some of which may carry water). Aerobically, the trip is rated somewhere between moderate and difficult; technically, it is easy. Riding surfaces include graded gravel, compacted dirt and clay, annoyingly bumpy spreads of volcanic rock, and pavement. The outing begins just up the hill from the burg of Leeds, near the 19th-century mining town of Silver Reef. Although exclusive homes now grow from the hillsides where mines once emerged, there’s enough remaining of an earlier Silver Reef to make it a very interesting detour. The town museum and an art gallery are located in the old Wells Fargo building. General location: The ride runs along the lower southern flanks of the Pine Valley Mountains, north and east of St. George.
