This outing makes an excellent introduction to the St. George area, offering a splendid overview of the outlying landscapes. Soon after setting out you’ll look down on the mini-city of St. George, which seems to grow larger by the minute, sprawling beneath the brilliantly red Red Hills and other features, all of it backed by the high Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness to the north. Then, about 6.5 miles into the ride, you pass through a low notch to enter a broad, grassy basin rimmed ahead by the distant crinkling of the Hurricane Cliffs; the red, rimrocky bulk of Sand Mountain on the left; and, to the south, the gently sloping, piñon-studded backside of the Warner Ridge hogback. Occasional “For Sale” signs predict imminent change in this area. General location: The ride begins in St. George.
