The first 11 miles of this 25-mile point-to-point are coincidental with miles 18 through 29 of Ride 3, only here you’re going in the opposite direction. With a progression of longish climbs and descents over the first 15 miles followed by a memorable multimile descent along Cottonwood Creek, the ride is rated aerobically moderate in difficulty. Mostly well-surfaced roads, along with two miles of unsurfaced road and three miles of pavement, earn it an easy technical rating. Numerous intriguing spurs branch off here and there along the way—so many, in fact, that this would make a good ride to do fully loaded, allowing you to set up camp where you choose and then explore the tougher side trails unencumbered. Plenty of opportunities for dispersed camping lie along the early stretches of the route, in a setting of sagebrush flats rimmed with sloping islands of aspen and fir. General location: The beginning point is 19 miles southeast of Fairview; ride’s end is about 10 miles northwest of Castle Dale.
