This is part of a series of local, county, regional, and state trails that connect, or are slated to connect, into one another in this area. In this case the connections go well beyond this specified route: one deeper into Island Lake State Park, and another into Kensington Metropark and from there on to the town of Milford (all in this book). It’s quite a web and offers a nice variety of riding options. Begin in Volunteer Park where there’s plenty of parking. This section may not be known officially as part of the Huron Valley Trail. It’s actually part of the South Lyon City Trails, but it’s a good place to begin and it will take you nearly the full extent of the available pathway in the area. In the late 1800s, South Lyon was a busy railroad crossroads. Not all the railroads prospered through the years, leaving linear public open space winding through town, hence the prevalent bike path corridors.
