The headlands braced by the Bodega Bay and harbor on one side and the Paci?c on the other make the short, dramatic Bodega Head Trail one of the most memorable coastal hikes in California. Native Americans were the first to build seasonal encampments on this coast, and they did so for over 3,000 years.
But life began to change with the arrival of Russian settlers and fur trappers in the early 1800s, followed by Spanish missionaries and European pioneers lured by gold and the redwood forests’ lumber fortunes. For many it was the 1963 Hitchcock thriller The Birds that put Bodega Bay on the
destination radar. The movie was filmed in Bodega Bay and the small community of Bodega 5 miles south.
