The Deschutes River is yet another Oregon waterway protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Located on the other side of the Cascade Mountains, the landscape is decidedly different from most of the other adventures described in this book. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Portland to Maupin, the recommended put-in for this paddle. The Lower Deschutes affords a great variety of easy paddling mixed with bursts of Class II–III whitewater through deep, river-carved gorges. While the drive to the Deschutes River is a bit of a jaunt from Portland, it’s well worth the trek. This is a good one to turn into an overnight or multiday excursion if you’re so inclined.
