This seasonal waterfall lies in a secluded canyon shaded by stands of redwoods. Dawn Falls may be the goal, but Mount Tamalpais, Marin County’s Sleeping Lady, is the dominant feature on this hike. Views of the summit dominate at the outset, and even as the nose of the Lady slips from view, the dense oak and laurel forest that makes up her gown is all-encompassing. The falls are tucked along Larkspur Creek in one of the mountain’s deep green folds, fed by seasonal rainfall and dry by midsummer. Begin by walking along the wide Southern Marin Line Fire Road, which curls south into the 196-acre Baltimore Canyon Open Space Preserve. The woods that cling to the steep hills are second growth; the old growth was harvested near the turn of the twentieth century to provide lumber for a burgeoning San Francisco.
