Enjoy a rustic path leading along a secluded stretch of the South Yuba River to these year-round falls. The path to the confluence of Spring Creek and the South Yuba River is as rough-and-tumble as the river that flows next to it. It’s generally easy, but the uneven footing, the narrowness, and the exposure demand concentration and nimbleness. It’s just plain fun. The waterfall itself is a short spill from the mouth of the Spring Creek drainage into the South Yuba. The friendliness of the falls, and the pool it splashes into, depends on how much water is flowing: If the flows are high, it’s best to sit on the rocky sidelines and watch, but if the flows are low, you can pick your way through the boulders down to the river and pool. Scrambling up alongside Spring Creek is also inviting, with the creek cascading through boulders in drops several feet high into smaller pools, all shaded by oaks and madrones.
