An easy, traversing hike leads to a thunderous fall on the North Yuba River. Looking both upstream and downstream from the bridge at Loves Falls, the North Yuba River is big and furious. When flush with snowmelt it explodes through the boulders hemming in the canyon bottom, and even when summer mellows the flows, the cataracts still flash and enliven. Reaching the falls entails hiking a friendly stretch of the famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which rides the ridges from the Mexican border to Canada. The trail traverses the north side of the North Yuba River canyon, passing through stands of mixed evergreen forest.
