After tumbling down a steepening gorge, Kings Creek streaks over a vertical cliff and plummets into a hidden creek bed. The premier waterfall in a spectacular, often overlooked national park, Kings Creek Falls is a cooling interlude amid a fury of volcanism. Lassen Peak looms overhead and out of sight, but on the narrow ledge above the waterfall, with a thin wire railing guarding the daring vantage point, it’s water, not fire, that invigorates the senses. A hike to the fall begins with a pleasant meander along the edge of the Lower Meadow, with a gentler incarnation of Kings Creek winding through it. A brief hitch through red firs leads to a trail fork near the east edge of the meadow. Go left (northeast) on the signed trail to Kings Creek Falls; the right (southeast) trail leads to Sifford Lake.
