This elegant, secluded horsetail waterfall graces a canyon embossed in mosses and ferns.
The setting of Potem Falls is almost tropical. When the rains come, swelling the mosses and waking the ferns, brushstrokes in a varied palette of green enliven the ravine enveloping the classic waterfall. A fabulous pool wells at the base of the long, unbroken whitewater spill. Swimming on a rainy winter’s day may be out of the question, but come warm days in spring and early summer, the cool, deep water invites.
The upside-down hike to the base of the falls, while moderately steep, is short. Three sweeping, easy switchbacks mitigate the incline. The waterfall comes into view at the second switchback: Though the trail swings away at that point on the descent, the falls are in sight for a portion of the ascent.
