Carve two notches in the hiking stick for this route, one for reaching the seasonal waterfall and the second for completing a short section of the storied Pacific Crest Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which rides the ridges of California, Oregon, and Washington for more than 2,600 miles from Mexico to Canada, incorporates plenty of challenging terrain. Fear not the forbidding surroundings: Though the piece of the PCT to Burstarse Falls is enveloped in steep, wooded mountainsides and shadowed by jagged crags and an imposing volcano, it’s an easy ride. The Dog Trail leading to the PCT? Not so easy, but it’s over relatively quickly. The falls themselves are ephemeral, so timing is everything. The setting is surreal on misty days after the rainy season starts.
