This trail leads down to, and then under, the waterfall on Hedge Creek. Mossbrae Falls may be Dunsmuir’s reclusive waterfall star, but Hedge Creek Falls has what it takes to be a scene stealer. The clincher: passing through the alcove that opens behind the fall. Between the brevity and ease of the trail, the pass-around (a perfect place to repeat the tale told on the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce website that outlaw Black Bart used the “cave” as a hideout), and the overlook of the Sacramento River at trail’s end, Hedge Creek Falls is a great hike for families with children. The trail begins in Hedge Creek Park, with picnic sites and great views of the narrow Dunsmuir valley and Mount Shasta towering above. Pass through the picnic area to the signed trail above the creek. Three switchbacks drop easily and quickly to Hedge Creek and the falls, with the noise of the nearby highway overcome by the noise of falling water as you descend. Follow the path behind the 15-foot free-falling portion of the plume, hunching below the overhanging basalt.

These Falls are right off the I-5 freeway exit. You can take the kids. Also, there are benches along the trail. The Falls are beautiful. You can stand behind Falls in the cave behind. Moreover, you take a trail behind the Falls too. Would highly recommend this quick hike if heading up Norther California.
