A short walk leads to the base of a tucked-away waterfall. Located just north of the Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, styled the “gateway to tall trees country,” Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve protects a stand of coast redwoods on the site of a former resort. The redwood grove is on the banks of the South Fork Eel River, throwing a blanket of shade onto the cleared forest floor. Step out of the trees onto the riverbanks, and the sunlight can be blinding... if the fog hasn’t rolled up the river valley. Dora Falls is across the highway from the redwood grove.
