Follow the North Trail through a mixed evergreen forest containing vibrant stands of fragrant incense cedar and maroon-barked manzanita to a reconstructed Sierra Miwok village where the focal point is the largest chaw’se, or grinding rock, in North America. A huge flat rock lies at the heart of the meadow and there the women worked, in one of the most glorious kitchens nature could provide, surrounded by a woodland scented with incense cedar and thick with the oaks from which the Miwok harvested their staple crop, acorns. On the rock, outfitted with pestles and good company, the women prepared the acorns.
