Follow a remote stretch of Folsom Lake’s shoreline to a beachhead with lovely lake views. The route is part of the Pioneer Express Trail, used by equestrians for endurance rides, but those on foot need endure nothing more strenuous than a few ups and downs. The hike from Sterling Pointe to Rattlesnake Bar begins in a ritzy neighborhood, where the manicured backyards of trophy homes back up to the serenity of a rather remote stretch of Folsom Lake. No need to be envious, however, as you’ll share in wealth of a different kind—the kind that money can’t buy—along the trail. The views alone are priceless (and are probably what made the area so desirable to the well-heeled residents of the Pointe); add in the lushness of the oak woodland and the sense of well-being that exercise generates . . . well, you don’t have to pay a penny for that.
