The AT&SF railroad found the town attractive as well and sought to establish their rail yards here. Content with living in a small town (and his power over it) Perea dissuaded them by inflating land prices from $2 to $425 per acre. The railyards went to Albuquerque instead. Still, Bernalillo profited from the rail line and the mining boom that spanned 1890–1910. A rowdy commercial district developed on the south end of town while the ecclesiastical atmosphere continued to grow on the north end. A century later, that divided pattern is still evident. However, today the bulk of Bernalillo’s commercial sprawl runs along US 550, sparing the historic areas from fast-food and shopping franchises. Downtown Bernalillo is 7 miles north of Albuquerque city limits and can be accessed via I-25 or the Rail Runner.
