Martineztown–Santa Barbara is an old neighborhood that stretches north from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. to Menaul Blvd. Despite its proximity to downtown Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico North Campus, it’s an isolated community squeezed between the industrial railroad corridor and the tangle of interstate exchanges known as the Big I. Though the area has suffered disinvestment and decline, signs of improvement are starting to show in the early stages of redevelopment projects focused on cultural and historic preservation and commercial revitalization. This walk visits historic schools, chapels, and two large cemeteries on opposite sides of I-40.
