Both the interstate and the river harbor interesting corridors built exclusively for pedestrians and bicyclists, but because they also pose significant barriers to local traffic, you may likely find other points on the loop that are more convenient to access than the designated starting point, Pat Hurley Park. The loop begins (and ends) here because you can get a helpful preview of the environs from the overlook. But wherever you choose to start, you’ll eventually find a unique neighborhood on the cusp of the West Mesa, a riverside woodland known as the bosque, a brief stretch of a transcontinental interstate, and a struggling remnant of historic Route 66. It also crosses four bridges, two of them relatively high. Gephyrophobiacs and acrophobiacs alike are advised to preview the I-40 segment of the route before committing to the walk. And if these 6 miles aren’t enough, you can tack on many more with optional detours through the ABQ BioPark.
