Forest Park is a lush, 5,000-acre network of dense forest located on the west side of Portland, just on the edge of the city. Most of the trails are closed to cycling, but Saltzman Road is a gorgeous and fortunate exception. The floor of the steep trail is old pavement that has been covered with hard- pack pea gravel, making for very easy gravel riding. Forest Park is stunning year-r ound, but Saltzman Road is especially picturesque in the fall, when leaves gently blanket the trail and autumnal tones paint a colorful landscape. This route also includes a thrilling descent and a ride over the towering St. Johns Bridge. On the weekends, Saltzman Road can be crowded with a mix of trail users, so head out on a weekday if you want to have more of the trail to yourself.
