An unusual hike partially on a jeep road to a large, fish-filled mountain lake in a tree-less, high-altitude basin. When environmental and economic concerns finally defeated the mining plans, I added this route. That doesn’t mean the area is pristine, though, because the landscape around Goose Lake is still pockmarked with mining scars from the early 1900s. Thankfully now, nature has made great strides in reclaiming many of the mine sites, and many millions of Superfund money has hurried nature along. The end result is a reasonably attractive landscape dotted with trout- filled lakes. Unfortunately, most of this area is not in the Absaroka-Bear tooth Wilderness, withheld from the original legislation because of mining activity.
