This is an easily accessible base-camp hike with an incredible number of alpine lakes within easy walking distance. You can reach Native Lake from three major trailheads: Beartooth Lake, Clay Butte, and Island Lake. Consider arranging a shuttle at a different trailhead to avoid retracing your steps on the way out. With two vehicles, it’s best to leave one at Beartooth Lake and then go in at the Clay Butte Trailhead. Then the entire trip is downhill, with the exception of a minor bump just before Native Lake. The start at Clay Butte is at 9,600 feet, and the end at Beartooth Lake is at 8,900 feet.
