Preserving West Hylebos Wetlands as a park was an exercise in perseverance and hard labor launched by a few tenacious conservationists in the midst of 1980s urban growth. A battle ensued. The score: Opposition 0, Nature 1. The end result is one of the finest wetland parks in the Northwest. A homesteader’s log cabin (circa 1890) greets hikers at the trailhead at West Hylebos Wetlands Park. A period photo posted at the cabin depicts the scene when the cabin was first erected: a hewn log structure surrounded by the stumps of old-growth trees. But walk past the clearing and in a short time find yourself descending into a wetland forest, a verdant place that seems as though it has never seen the blade of a saw. But that’s not true—most of the forest is second growth with the exception of a few old-growth trees.
