This hike is an excellent, condensed introduction to the various types of trails that you can expect to find within Forest Park. It includes a steep fire lane and steep winding trails as well as a gentle roadbed that is also a popular bike route and a section of the very gentle Wildwood Trail, which is a hikers-only route.
From the Saltzman Road Trailhead, at 1,080 feet elevation, head east on Saltzman Road. In 0.1 mile there will be an unmarked path to the left. Turn left on the path and follow it northeast through the Douglas fir, red alder, and big leaf maple woods for another 0.1 mile to a graveled roadbed. Turn right on the roadbed and go a short distance to its end at a viewpoint. During the winter when the leaves are off the alder trees, Mount St. Helens can be seen through the branches.
