Aside from the views, the hike itself is rather nondescript. However, the large boulder outcroppings of Lion Canyon become apparent rather early on, so the distance to the destination is observable and tangible, even though Painted Rock is a bit closer than the actual canyon itself. As the hike finally enters the mountaintop vale where the pictographs reside, a magical quality can be felt in the very air. Strange stone formations begin to crop up resembling Celtic standing stones.
