If you’re looking for a quick way to get away from the car and into Mount Rainier’s alpine splendor, this is your express lane to ecstasy. The Sourdough Ridge Trail, which begins in the thick of the tourist-choked Sunrise visitor center, leaves it all fairly quickly, climbing to a ridge top and turning east beneath Antler Peak. Kids love the open views and general abundance of marmots.

Excellent trail that quickly climbs out of Sunrise to Frozen Lake and then on to the Wonderland Trail which is a great way to return to Sunrise. Wonderful views of the Mountain for virtually the entire 3 mile hike. Be sure to pack extra clothing -- as we approached Frozen Lake on a hot, sunny day, a cloud appeared out of nowhere and the winds were then cold. We also encountered some fairly dangerous snow heading back down to Sunrise on the Wonderland Trail. BE CAREFUL! The only thing that lowered the rating of this trail for me was the number of people we encountered. It was crowded until we hit the Wonderland Trail. Happy trails, /R
