This is a long plod through forest singed, scorched (and a little bit spared) by the massive Tripod Fire of 2006 to a lonely outpost in the heart of one of the Okanogan’s largest roadless areas. From lofty North Twenty-mile Peak, with its dollop of meadows, feast on far-reaching views from the Kettle River Range all the way to the cloud-piercing guardians of the North Cascades Highway. Scan deep valleys too, including the Chewuch 1 mile directly below. Then put down the binoculars and check out the historical lookout that has sat guard on this peak since 1923.
