The Panther Creek Experimental Forest is a protected area of old, open pine and fir forest. The PCT rolls along the south and east sides of the forest preserve. The woods are teeming with wildlife, but remarkably lacking in human visitors, making it a wonderful place in which to find solitude and an opportunity to see a variety of birds and animals. During a visit in late September, I counted no less than a dozen species of birds, including downy woodpeckers, ravens, siskins, a mountain bluebird, an oriole, and a Cooper’s hawk. Among the animals I saw were deer, rabbits, and squirrels. I also noted the tracks of a big coyote and, on my return, found the tracks of a cougar overlying my earlier tracks. I didn’t see these critters but was certainly seen by them.
