The trail begins with spectacular views from the trailhead; Windy Ridge is the best road-accessible vantage point in the national monument. From there it travels up and down ridges and pumice slopes onto the Plains of Abraham— broad, barren, ash-strewn meadows that are just beginning to recover from the devastation wrought by the eruption, allowing you to experience the power of an active volcano.
