Considering the skyscraping volcanoes that surround the South Cascades, it should be no surprise that the entire area was formed by repeated eruptions and volcanic activity, and not always from the big cinder cones that decorate the horizons. This trail loops around the east side of a large volcanic crater, on the edge of one of its last massive lava flows.
