Jumbo is one of the big boys of the vast Dark Divide Roadless Area. Not that Jumbo is a massive mountain, but rather, it’s one of the big highlights of the incredibly scenic and wild roadless area that stretches across a network of ridges and peaks in the heart of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. This route, like many of those of the Dark Divide, still faces the threat of excessive motorized use, but the ongoing efforts of trail advocates have defeated several attempts by motorcycle groups to rebuild these trails to make motorized travel easier. The rugged route is worth protecting, since the pristine meadows atop the ridges are very fragile and slow to heal—not to mention wonderfully scenic.
