With all due respect to the Bard, what’s in a mountain? That which we call Mount Rose by any other name would still be as steep. This is a challenging hike—one of the steepest trails in the Olympics. Consider Rose a quiet alternative to Mount Ellinor. And Rose offers a few scenic rewards too, including a knockout view of Lake Cushman from 3500 feet directly above it. Start on Trail No. 814 by crossing a cascading creek on a bridge and heading up an old road. Enjoy it, for it’s the only level walking you’ll see on this hike. Then begin the grind. On good tread, start switchbacking to the heavens. Yes, the grade is steep, but it used to be worse before a dedicated volunteer trail crew reconfigured much of the route.

I enjoyed this trail. It doesnt have any real spectacular views until you get to the top, but the view there is amazing when the clouds break. I have read reviews posted here and elsewhere, and did not find the trail to be as difficult as people describe. Yes, there are a lot of switchbacks and no level ground, but the trail is not as steep as I thought it would be. I was up and down in 4 hrs including a nice break at the top. On my way down I even ran into a couple hiking up with a baby on board, so that should tell you it really isn't too strenuous. The trail was well established, with no washouts, and it is really more of a loop than an out and back if you take the summit loop, which I highly recommend.
