Hike through the pristine forest from Swamp Lake Trailhead to the Bumping River. Then ford the clear, cold stream and climb to Swamp Lake high on the slopes of American Ridge. Leaving the trailhead at 3, 630 feet elevation, the Swamp Lake Trail quickly crosses a small wooden bridge. The route heads southwest through the mixed-age conifer forest.
A little over 0. 1 mile from the trailhead, you will pass a swampy pond to the left of the trail. A little farther along there will be a short path to your right. This path leads to a viewpoint overlooking a falls in the Bumping River. There are cliffs below and some exposure at the viewpoint so be careful, especially if the ground and rocks are wet.
