Hike from a trailhead along the American River to lovely Mesatchee Falls, then on to the top of American Ridge. Vanilla leaf and bunchberries cover the ground beneath the stately conifers. Watch for elk all along this hike—when I hiked this route, I saw far more elk than people. The route soon bears to the southwest and crosses a small stream; 0. 25 mile farther along, you will cross another small stream. A few yards west of the trailhead, you’ll reach the wilderness registration box. Stop and fill out your wilderness permit, then continue west, passing some large Douglas firs. Vanilla leaf and bunchberries cover the ground beneath the stately conifers. Watch for elk all along this hike—when I hiked this route, I saw far more elk than people.
