Originally established as an outdoor training ground for the Boy Scouts, Camp Long has grown into one of West Seattle’s premier parks. The scouting facilities were opened to the general public in 1984. And now everyone is welcome to hike the trails, camp in the shelters, and even climb on famous Schurman Rock, where many serious Cascade mountaineers first tested and developed their skills. At just less than 70 acres, Camp Long is far from a significant park if measured by size alone. Yet, as the old saying goes, good things come in small packages. For density of attractions, few parks can match this often-overlooked West Seattle reserve. All outings at Camp Long should start at the visitor center.
