Because it’s located on the north side of the ridge, this popular Canyon Creek Road–Damfino Lakes access route to the high country usually melts out a few weeks later than nearby south-facing trails.

The lakes earn their name. Damn if I know why they are called lakes. Puddles are more like it. The rest of the hike is excellent. Be sure to take the path all the way to the top of Excelsior. The 360 degree views are awesome. Sat up there alone for about 45 minutes just listening to the wind. Beautiful.
