This relentlessly steep hike climbs about 1,000 feet per mile on its way to a former fire lookout site and the awesome mountain vista that that role implies. As you approach the steeple (for which the mountain earns its name), you’ll find plenty of remnants from the old building that was torn down in the 1960s—cable, nails, bits of metal, and what looks like a still-standing outhouse. On the way up, though, you’ve got plenty of dark forest to switchback up and then its photographic negative—glorious open subalpine meadows awash in wildflowers and views that are simply stunning. Mountains, valleys, and forests on all sides, and to the west northern Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia where cities such as Bellingham and Vancouver, British Columbia, hang on at water’s edge.
