Say you’ve picnicked a tad too much and you need to work some of it off. This is the hike to do it on. Tell your traveling companions that you’ll meet them at Artist Point. While they drive the remaining 2 miles of road switchbacks, you head up this trail, which makes no ifs, ands, or buts about tackling the elevation.
The trail, a mix of singletrack, rock steps, and more than likely snow, climbs heathery hillocks and wildflower meadows, sometimes roadside, sometimes not, before opening up just across from the Artist Point parking lot. Sure, it’s steep, but it’s short, and the alpine views are more than grand the entire way. Best yet, you can bum a ride on the way back down.
