Most of the area’s marquee hikes are higher-elevation affairs, which is great, but they’re hikable only in summer and early fall. Here’s a gem that’s low enough to be passable just about year-round. You’ll thrill to the rushing Nooksack River powering its way through everything and anything in its path— house-size boulders, snags, the riverbed, kayakers. In summer this is the put-in spot for several kayaking outfitters. This is the North Fork of the Nooksack River here, and it gets its start from glaciers on the north side of Mount Shuksan. The mostly gentle riverside trail meanders through a forest of giant moss-hung firs, hemlocks, and cedars that all but block out the rain on those rainy days. This is a great any-time-of-day, any-time-of-year hike that’s suitable for the whole family.
