Hike up Frosty Creek to Frosty Pass and Lakes Margaret and Mary. Frosty Pass is a high pass at the upper end of Icicle Ridge, dividing Frosty and Wildhorse Creek drainages. This is a popular backpacking hike through some of the most scenic country in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, but it’s a long weekend outing since the first lake is 10 miles up the trail, with about 3,000 feet of elevation gain, a bit stiff for one day with a heavy backpack. The hike is best done as a three- or four-day backpack, allowing time to rest, relax, and explore. Old maps and guidebooks show the trail being only about 2.8 miles up from the trailhead, but a bridge washed out and the Forest Service relocated the trail, adding some 3 miles to the one-way distance.
