Hike through the second-growth forest leaving Grouse Creek Vista trailhead to the open flower-covered ridges high above. Then traverse the open slopes to the summit of Silver Star Mountain. The area was burned in the 1902 Yacolt fire, leaving the open slopes that are reforesting only very slowly. Bears are common here; keep a sharp eye out and you may catch a glimpse of one. If photographing flowers is in your plans, take lots of film.
