Hike along a mostly open ridgeline with fantastic views and tons of flowers, from a poorly marked trailhead on Forest Road 41 to the summit of Silver Star Mountain. Bears are common here; keep a sharp lookout and you may see one. Looking southwest from the open talus slope, the Columbia River and Portland can be seen in the distance through the haze. You reach the ridgeline, at 3,460 feet elevation, on the west side of Little Baldy 0.6 mile after leaving the timbered saddle.
