Hike to the craggy summit of Hamilton Peak and take in the all-direction view. From the summit the ice-covered volcanoes of the Cascades rise above the lower timbered mountains in all directions. To the north the imposing, ice-covered Mount Rainier thrusts its 14,408-foot-high summit toward the sky. Goat Rocks is close by to the northeast, and Mount Adams is to the southeast. To the south in the distance, Mount Hood rises across the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Looking west is the bobbed-off summit of Mount St. Helens. Below the summit to the north, cliffs drop away steeply. From the thin soil just south of the summit grow cat’s ear lilies, lupine, paintbrush, and a few leopard lilies. Penstemon cling to the cracks in the summit rock.
